January 9 Update
Writing:
The kids have been working on starting new goals for the new year. We wrote New Years Resolutions, made Yetis, for "Are you 'Yeti' for the New Year", and also made some personal and school goals (stapled in their yellow folders). Have your child show you some of their goals, and ask how they are working on them. I told them that if they forget to do something, it's not too late to try again the next day.
Phonics:
We have been working on being word builders during Phonics. We have been talking about all of the strategies to spell and read big words, especially focusing on the vowels in every syllable.
Math:
The kids finished their math assessment this week, and these went home today (Friday). Please go over these tests with your child to show them what they may have missed. Remember on the grading rubric, things that are highlighted in blue are standards that are tested to mastery for the report card right now. Anytime the kids get a 1 or 2 on the report card, I will reassess them to see if they understand it later with more practice.
Reading:
Gus, our classroom dragon, is teaching us some tips on how to be a supportive partner when reading. We are practicing reading with others, to help each other when words get tricky to solve, and how to encourage them to keep trying with the strategies we are learning in reading and phonics.
I also got to spend the day listening to the kids read to me, and give them their new reading levels! Ask your child what they are reading at!
Voracious Reader of the Week:
Congratulations to Jack for being this week's Voracious Reader! Jack moved up TWO levels since I read with him last! Keep up the great reading, Jack!
Super Kid:
Congratulations to our first 2026 Super Kid, Nadia! Nadia is doing a great job in class, being a good friend to others, and SOARing in class! Keep up the great work, Nadia!
Homework:
The two-sided math sheet is due by January 16. I paperclipped their ruler to the page to help with the measuring. They do not have to return the ruler.
Extra Information:
January 16- Early Release
Valentine's Day- I know, I know, this seems SO far away and we JUST got over Christmas! I just wanted to let you know, you DO NOT have to buy Valentine's cards this year....YAY!!!! In second grade, the second graders actually write their own valentines IN CLASS!!!! We use this to help with teaching letter writing. Each student will write 3 sentences to EVERY student in class. Every year we do this, it is so fun to see the kids read each other's Valentines cards, it really is so special!
We would LOVE for some fun stickers to help make these Valentines look nice though! So next time you are out and about at the store, and see some stickers that you think the kids may like for our Valentine cards, we would love for you to grab those and donate those to us. THANK YOU!
