January 16 Update

Writing:

We are working on writing reviews!  This is such a fun unit, since the kids can write about their opinions on things, and tell others about it.  We are currently working on our movie reviews, so if you feel like you may need your child to do some "research" you may just have to let your child watch the movie they are writing about, to get some fresh ideas for their opinion...I mean it's all for their "research".

We are also working on Valentine's Day cards!  The kids have been working hard on writing valentines for EACH student in the classroom.  This can be tricky to write THREE sentences with correct punctuation and spelling for every single person.  We are doing a few a week, so that by the time Valentine's Day comes, we can just relax and read all of the sentimental cards.

Math:

The kids are working in our next unit in math, and we are going to do a lot with money.  To help with this, we started a new incentive in the classroom.  Each student got a "wallet" in which they have a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.  If they are SOARing, putting away their things, raising their hand and waiting to talk, etc. they can EARN money.  If they are choosing not to SOAR, forgetting to put their name on their paper, being loud and disruptive, they can LOSE money.  This will be such a great way to practice using money, making change, adding and subtracting with money, and hopefully encourage your child to SOAR.  The students can buy things with their money as well, so they will also learn how to save for something they are wanting.  They are pretty pumped up about this, and it is fun to see them help each other SOAR to earn some extra cash!

Reading:

We are learning how to be good supportive partners with reading.  We watched a quick video on how to be a good coach, and we are applying some of those strategies with our own coaching in the classroom.

SEL:

We have been talking about our Classroom Charter words: Happy, Safe, and Relaxed, and have been looking to see if we are doing the things we said we would to to ensure that everyone is feeling these every single day that they step into our classroom.  We all agreed that we need to work on these a little more, because there are days that we may not be feeling each of these words.  Ask your child what makes them feel happy, safe, and calm when they are in class.

Homework:

The two-sided math page is due by January 23.

Extra Information:

Valentines- Remember you do not have to buy Valentines this year!  However, we would LOVE for some stickers to decorate our valentines with.  So if you happen to see any when you are out and about, please send them our way!

Speaking of Valentine's Day...If you would like to sign up to bring anything to our class party, we would love that!  Sign Up Genius
