January 30 Update

Writing: The kids finished their Restaurant Reviews this week! We really focused on writing with a clear main idea and strong supporting details. I’m excited to read their reviews and see how much they’ve improved since the movie reviews we wrote last week. Fancy Purple Pen Award: Congratulations to Brooklin for getting the Fancy Purple Pen Award for her movie review on Zootopia 2!  I have yet to see this movie, but she had some convincing arguments to convince me to go and see it soon!  Keep up the great writing, Brooklin! Phonics: We have been working on a vowel manual from the BLC company and discussing different ways to spell words with the long  a ,  e , and  i  sounds. Ask your child to share tips about when to use the plain letter  a, e, or i  versus when to use  y . a, e, i  → often at the end of a syllable (table, began, cider) y  → often at the end of a word (say, happy, fly) Math: We are working with money in math....

Writing: The kids finished their reviews on movies this week, so I'm excited to read these and maybe be convinced to watch some of these over these cold, snowy days! Next week, we will be writing a review on a restaurant.  So maybe over the weekend, have them think of some restaurants they have been to and like (McDonalds, Texas Road House, Culvers, Dorados, etc.) Math: We have been adding up to 1,000 this week!  We are also very into our money that we have been earning to buy different things!  Ask your child how it's going with earning money, and what they think they can do to earn even more. SEL: The kids learned all about empathy this week.  We learned how to put ourselves in other's shoes when they may be feeling a certain way, and how we can help be empathetic. Homework: With all of the snow days this week, we didn't get as much time to work on Valentines in class.  They are supposed to have 10 finished by now (5 per week), and there were quite a few kids ...

January 16 Update

Writing: We are working on writing reviews!  This is such a fun unit, since the kids can write about their opinions on things, and tell others about it.  We are currently working on our movie reviews, so if you feel like you may need your child to do some "research" you may just have to let your child watch the movie they are writing about, to get some fresh ideas for their opinion...I mean it's all for their "research". We are also working on Valentine's Day cards!  The kids have been working hard on writing valentines for EACH student in the classroom.  This can be tricky to write THREE sentences with correct punctuation and spelling for every single person.  We are doing a few a week, so that by the time Valentine's Day comes, we can just relax and read all of the sentimental cards.   Math: The kids are working in our next unit in math, and we are going to do a lot with money.  To help with this, we started a new incentive in the classroom....

Writing: The kids have been working on starting new goals for the new year.  We wrote New Years Resolutions, made Yetis, for "Are you 'Yeti' for the New Year", and also made some personal and school goals (stapled in their yellow folders).  Have your child show you some of their goals, and ask how they are working on them.  I told them that if they forget to do something, it's not too late to try again the next day. Next week we are going to start writing reviews to go with our Opinion Unit.  We will start with writing a review on a movie we have seen, so you may have to let them do some "research" and watch a movie the next few days :) Phonics: We have been working on being word builders during Phonics.  We have been talking about all of the strategies to spell and read big words, especially focusing on the vowels in every syllable. Math: The kids finished their math assessment this week, and these went home today (Friday). Please go over these tests w...
