September 12 Update
Writing:
The kids are busy working on their small moments. This week we learned how to write four different leads (talking, action, snapshot, and question), ask your child which one they chose to use for their writing. We also learned how to write transition words to keep our writing in order. Next week we will continue to write these small moments, and learn how to write a good wrap up for the ending.
Math:
The kids are working on making partners for 20 (example: 16+4=20). Ask your child to come up with as many ways they can add two numbers to equal 20...yes, 0+20 counts! We have also been talking about even and odd numbers, can your child tell you how they know if a number is even or odd?
Phonics:
The kids have been learning about the r controlled vowel and how it can be a little tricky! (We call it the Rascal R). There are so many words that sound like the er, but are actually spelled with an ir or ur (for example bird, or...burp...they loved writing this word on whiteboards!)
The kids having fun writing r controlled vowels on whiteboards (look closely at what word they wrote):
Reading:
We have been talking about the best ways to get better at reading is to read, read, read! Also, making sure to stop when a word doesn't make sense, to see if we can make the word make sense (we may have to change the sound of the vowel), and working on making our reading voices sound more fluent.
Voracious Reader of the Week:
Congratulations to Kyla for being this week's Voracious Reader! Kyla has been doing a great job reading the entire time during reading, and working on becoming a better reader! Keep up the great reading, Kyla!
SEL:
The kids made bracelets in class to show our three words from our charter. I had the kids come up with a color that comes to their mind when they think of each of the three words: happy, calm, and safe. We then put these three colored beads on a strip of a bandana to make a bracelet. Not only does this make us a community to have matching bracelets, but it's a daily reminder of making the right choices to help work on our classroom charter.
Super Kid of the Week:
Congratulations to Beau for being this week's Super Kid! Beau has been doing a wonderful job SOARing in class, and is a great friend to others! If you are ever having a bad day, Beau's smile will make your day better! Keep up the great work, Beau!
