September 5 Update
Writing:
The kids are starting to write a small moment. This week we learned how to plan our story across five pages, and learned how to write leads. Next week we will learn how to write transitions to keep our story in order. We are still working on writing five star sentences, so the homework that is going home this week will help them practice writing a sentence.
Phonics:
We have been talking about open and closed syllables to help us read words that we don't know. Ask your child to show you how to break the word: CONTAIN up, and show you how they can underline the vowels (remembering to keep vowel teams together), and underline the syllables after splitting the word up between the vowels, and telling you if the syllables are open or closed (if they are open the vowel makes a long vowel sound, and if it's closed the vowel will make a short vowel sound).
Math:
We are continuing to have fun in math! The kids are loving the different work stations, and have also been doing some graphing, addition, and subtraction.
Reading:
The kids were able to go to the new library for the first time this week! Our library day is Monday, so please make sure to have your child bring his/her two library books back each Monday to get new ones.
Voracious Reader of the Week:
Congratulations to Conor for being our first Voracious Reader of the Week! Conor has been doing a wonderful job in reading, working on his reading stamina, and picking good fit books! Keep up the great reading, Conor!
Homework:
The five star sentence page is due by Friday, September 12. They can write on the back, or if there's enough room on the front, or even on a separate paper and can staple it onto the homework sheet.
Super Kid:
Congratulations to Brooklin for being our first Super Kid of the week! Brooklin does a wonderful job SOARing in the classroom! Keep up the great work, Brooklin!
