September 26 Update

Writing:

The kids are working on another small moment!  We are going to show what great writers we are with including a good lead, showing not telling details, dialouge, transitions, and onomatopoeia!  I can't wait to read these stories when they finish next week!

Fancy Purple Pen Award:

Congratulations to our first recipient of the Fancy Purple Pen Award, Weston!  I give this award after the kids finish a writing piece, and look to see which student did an awesome job incorporating the skills I taught into their own writing.  Weston did an amazing job writing about a day that he spent at his cottage.  Keep up the great writing, Weston!

Social Studies:

We are learning about communities in Social Studies.  We have talked about community helpers and also how our communities help with our needs (food, shelter, water, air).  We also learned about different types of communities, and talked about what would be fun in living in each (rural, urban, and suburban).  Ask your child what kind of community they want to live in when they are an adult, and why?

Math:

The kids finished their first unit tests (these will go home next week so you can see how they did), and we are moving right along with the next unit.  We started off by learning all about Jessie and the Beanstalk, and magic beans!  We then counted how many magic beans we have, and got all the way to 851!  The kids learned that we could count these by grouping them into tens, and then changing the tens to 100s.  It made counting so much more fun!



Reading:

Next week we are going to start our next unit on non-fiction reading.  Ask your child what he/she is interested in reading and learning about.

Voracious Reader of the Week:

Congratulations to Ivy for being this week's Voracious Reader!  Ivy has been doing an awesome job reading, and has moved up SO much from the end of first grade!  Keep up the great reading, Ivy!

Super Kid:

Congratulations to Axel for being this week's Super Kid!  Axel is doing a great job, and is a great friend to others!  Keep up the great work, Axel!

Homework:

The five star sentence is due by Friday, October 3.

Extra Information:

October 3- Color the Park

Keep on donating...our class is currently in the lead for the teacher race!  

October 30- We will be celebrating Halloween at school, and also have a school-wide parade.  More information will be coming!  In second grade, we don't do one party, but instead do fun activities throughout the day, so won't be needing any parent volunteers.  However, we would love for some supplies to make the day extra fun!  If you would like to sign up for anything that will make our day more fun, please sign up here: Sign Up Genuis

October 31- No School

We have ANOTHER Senior helper in our classroom!  Meet Miss Sophia!  She will also be coming throughout the year to help out with the kids.  I love having my "old" second graders come back to our classroom!  Miss Kate, Miss Sophia, and Mr. Jake love coming too!





The kids had fun tie-dying socks today!  Keep these in the bag for at least 24 hours and then follow the directions stapled onto the bag for cleaning.

Writing: The kids are busy working on their small moments.  This week we learned how to write four different leads (talking,action, snapshot, and question), ask your child which one they chose to use for their writing.  We also learned how to write transition words to keep our writing in order.  Next week we will continue to write these small moments, and learn how to write a good wrap up for the ending. Math: The kids are working on making partners for 20 (example: 16+4=20).  Ask your child to come up with as many ways they can add two numbers to equal 20...yes, 0+20 counts!  We have also been talking about even and odd numbers, can your child tell you how they know if a number is even or odd? Phonics: The kids have been learning about the r controlled vowel and how it can be a little tricky!  (We call it the Rascal R).  There are so many words that sound like the er, but are actually spelled with an ir or ur (for example bird, or...burp...they loved ...

December 12 Update

 Writing: The kids finished up writing letters to different people about books they think the recipient of the letter would like.  They wrote to Mrs. Stefanich, their first grade teacher, a friend, and a family member.  They delivered these letters to people they wrote these to, so if you were a recipient of such a letter, it may be fun to write back to your child.  We ended the week by looking back at our first letter to Mrs. Stefanich which was graded, and rewrote it to make it even better to see how our scores will change. Math: We have been measuring a lot in second grade.  We measured with feet, yards, and inches.  Next week, we will take a check point on what we have been learning, and then we will continue with this unit a few days after Winter Break, and take our test within that first week back. September 19 Update

Writing: The kids finished their writing that they have been working on for two weeks!  We learned how to write different words other than said (we put said to bed), and how to 'show, not tell' in our writing, and even wrote onomatopoeia!  I can't wait to read their stories over the weekend. Phonics: We got a new student!  Meet Gus!  Gus is going to help us with Phonics this year, and he already fits in great with our class! Spelling: A paper came home with each of the kids today with a list of spelling words.  The words that don't have a star by them, are words that they didn't spell correctly, and parent volunteers will come and "test" your child on those throughout the year.  You can keep this copy of words at home to help your child practice. Math: We are working on adding and subtracting up to 20.  The homework that is going home will help with some more practice on what we are doing in class.
