January 6 Update

Writing:

The kids finished their Valentines this week and even had some extra time to enjoy a few “crafty” activities during writing! They worked incredibly hard to complete their Valentines, making sure each one included three sentences with correct punctuation. While that may sound simple, it is hard work for second graders!

Thank you so much to those of you who may have helped a little at home. We usually don’t run into this, but with so many snow days, it was a bit more challenging to get everything completed during school time. We truly appreciate your support!

Fancy Purple Pen Award:

Congratulations to Weston for being our Fancy Purple Pen Award recipient!  Weston did a great job writing a review about Pizza Ranch, (which is one restuarant that I don't usually go to, but he did a great job telling me why I should, so that may now change!) Keep up the great writing, Weston!

Math:

The kids are learning about different countries during number corner.  We are studying the flags, and making fractions with how much red is in the flag.  So far we have "traveled" to...

We are also working with adding and subtracting money.  A good practice to do at home would be to have your child take some coins, and add them up.  Can your child tell you what each coin is called?  Can they sing you our money song?  "A penny's worth one, a nickel's worth 5, a dime is worth 10, and a quarter 25!"

Phonics:

The kids worked on Vowel Manuals for the BLC company!  These are showing all of the ways that we spell the long vowel sounds.  These went home today, so make sure to have your child show you the different ways, and ask them to tell you the "tip" for each of the ways.

The kids had fun with our Pirate Day with R-controlled vowels!  Thank you for letting them dress the parrrrt!

Reading:

We are working on retelling our books.  Have your child tell you what book they are reading at school.
They should tell you the characters, the setting, the problem, and tell you the events in order from the beginning, middle, and end, and then tell you the solution.  If they haven't finished the book yet, then they should "infer" what may happen next by some of the events that are already happening.

Voracious Reader of the Week:

Congratulations to Ollie for being our Voracious Reader!  Ollie likes to read books at home that we have read in class as read aloud, and he is doing fantastic!  Keep up the great reading, Ollie!

Super Kid:

Congratulations to Addison for being our Super Kid of the Week!  Addison is such a hard worker, and great friend to others.  She can always put a smile on anyone's face!  Keep up the great work, Addison!
