February 20 Update
Writing:
The second graders made great progress in writing their book reviews. This will be their last grade for opinion writing. Next week, we will revisit informational writing for a few weeks as we study and write about Hudsonville History.
Social Studies:
This week we started our unit on economics. We talked about wants, needs, scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost. We also learned about natural and capital resources and learned how paper, gold, glass, and pencils are made. These are all concepts that come back in future grades, so we are trying to build a basic understanding
Math:
The second graders took their Unit 5 test on Tuesday, we went over it, and it came home in folders on Thursday. Attached to the test are a grade sheet and the two checkpoints from this unit. We finished the week by finishing the last module in Unit 5 which was all about patterns. The homework sheet that went home today will also help with patterns. Next week we will start Unit 6 which is the geometry unit.
Reading:
We worked on fluency and then spent a few days reviewing story elements. We will continue that work next week as we read books about our feeling words: irritable and emmbarassed.
Voracious Reader of the Week:
Congratulations to Nadia for being this week's Voracious Reader! Nadia has been doing great in reading, and has been using the strategies that we are learning to be an even better reader! Keep up the great reading, Nadia!
Homework:
The math sheet is due by February 27.
Super Kid:
Congratulations to Conor for being this week's Super Kid! Conor is a great friend to others, and has a big heart for his friends. Keep up the great work, Conor!
Extra Information:
February 23- Class Dress Up- Both Mrs. Chambers and our class will wear Blue and Yellow!
February 25- Favorite Team/Eagle Gear (wash the clothes from Monday and wear again :), or pick a favorite team to wear!)
Feb 27 - Early Release- Wear Red, White, and Blue
February 27- Second Grade Store!
We are going to spend some of our "money" that we have been saving and go to the second grade store! Mrs. Chambers and our class are going to be able to buy things. IF you have any toys, or small trinkets that you think your child may be done with, but others may enjoy, we would love those! Or if you are out and about and see some candy or small items that kids may want to buy, we would love to add those to our store. We will have sports cards, pokemon cards, stuffed animals, books, jewelry, small toys, candy, and more for the kids to buy! They are SO excited!
March 2- Gold, Silver and Bronze Day
March 3 & 5 Parent Teacher Conferences
March 4- Dress like a teacher day
March 6- Neon Day
March 1-30- You Are Special!
A letter went home on Friday, with a calendar on the back, of a You Are Special Activity that I do in the classroom:
Here is the letter for reference:
Dear Parents,
We all need to feel important and be told that we are “special.” Therefore,
during the month of March we will be celebrating each student as “Someone
Special.”
On the back of this, I attached a calendar where you will see which day will
be your child’s day.
When it is their “special” day, they may…
bring in pictures, bring in a show-n-tell such as a favorite stuffed animal, a rock
collection, an award from sports, a favorite book they could read to the class/have
me read, or any other thing that makes them feel special. They can even bring in a
person (grandparents, siblings, parents, someone that is special to them.). If they
want a person, just email me, and we can set up a time for the person to come
(probably around a 15 minute time block), and will make sure there is a background
check already filled out. Otherwise, bringing an object into school is great.
Also, at the end of each week, I will do “lunch bunch” with the kids that we
celebrated that week. For this, they will eat their normal lunch (so still their hot
lunch choice or the lunch they brought from home) but we will eat in the classroom.
This is always fun for me to get to eat lunch with them, and just talk.
I am really looking forward to this activity. I have done this many years, and
it’s always so fun to see what the kids show off on their special day. If you have
any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Very Sincerely,
Erin Hills
