August 21 Update
We had a great TWO days in 2nd Grade! This is such a great group of kids, and I'm so excited to spend the year with them. These past two days, we did a lot of getting to know you activities, routine practicing, and even fit in "some" learning :)
Here are some things we are going to work on for our four days next week:
Writing:
We wrote stories today about what we did for summer vacation, and I noticed we may need some practice with writing sentences. So, next week we will practice sentence structure, and then we are going to write an "On Demand" small moment. This is just a pre-test on their writing, before I give any writing instruction. They are going to write about something they have done, which will be perfect after our summer break, or long weekend. Hopefully, there will be a lot of fresh stories in their head that they can think of.
Phonics:
Next week we will take a spelling test, which will help me determine who needs help with certain phonics strategies, and we can put these kids into different groups for W.I.N. (What I Need).
Math:
Next week we will start our first math unit, and it will be all game-based activities! I am so excited to get these kids to LOVE math!
Reading:
Next week we will be starting to work on our reading stamina, and learn how to pick some good fit books. One of my favorite things to do is read, and it is my hope to turn these second graders into life-long readers!
Homework:
The kids got a pennant to fill out and decorate, and cut out for homework.
I give homework out on Fridays, usually it's just a math sheet, and it's just for parents to know what we are doing in class, and see if the kids can apply that knowledge outside of the classroom (and an awesome way for kids to show off their learning to their parents). Since I know from experience how busy families are, I give an entire week for this one homework assignment to be turned in. Kids can turn in ANY day before the following Friday, or wait until that next Friday to turn it in.

There were a few papers that came home in their yellow take home folders. If you notice that your child came home with papers that were left blank, you may want to ask them why they didn't write anything down. Did they feel rushed? Did they not know what to write? Did they feel like they were getting distracted? Did they feel like they were talking with others around them? These are great discussions to have at home, to talk about what they could do next week for when we are going to be digging a little more into our second grade curriculum.
Our Specials' Schedule:
What an awesome class!
